No – a landlord has no legal obligation to provide a lawnmower. Providing a lawnmower (or any other gardening equipment or tools) will make it easier for the tenant to maintain the garden but a landlord is not obliged to provide one.

The safety of any lawnmower supplied is covered by the General Product Safety Regulations so the landlord should check it is safe which means that under normal or reasonably foreseeable conditions of use does not present any risk or only the minimum risks compatible with the lawnmower’s use, considered to be acceptable and consistent with a high level of protection for the safety and health of persons. The landlord should also ensure any information on the risks posed by the lawnmower is passed on to the tenant and retain the documentation necessary for tracing the origin of the lawnmower.

Further, we recommend the landlord provides the tenant with the manufacturer’s instructions for the lawnmower.
